Spring sports season is upon us.

I’m in the young parenting phase where we are figuring out what sport we are into. I played a ton of sports going up, my husband was more of a surfer. My son is a little explorer, creator and builder type so we are trying to see which avenue he thrives in and help him flourish.

That’s one of my favorite things about motherhood is how nostalgic it can be. Getting flashbacks of homework you had to do, books you used to read. Remembering when my dad coached my softball team for so many years. When he tries to teach my son some pointers, it strikes a chord in my heart.

Were not the most “sporty” family where we live and breathe it, I’m not sure my children will be on the NBA and that’s ok. However, I love the principles around team sports. Making friends, sticking with something till the end of the season and working as a team. There is no “I” in team right? Don’t get me started on sports in the 90’s…. I played softball for 9 years, it was some of the best times of my life but also was intense.

We have been watching the absolute best 1993 film, ‘The Sandlot’ every night. Wendy Peffercorn? Come on -she’s such a babe! That’s my kind of sports lessons, watch the movie then let’s head to Dicks sporting goods get some cute gear and get into it. The outfit is half the fun. That’s why I worked at Ruby’s Diner for my first job- the dress was so damn cute with the little hat.

I love a theme, everything has to sort of tell a story in my head. When I go for it, I set the scene and go. Hence my kids random themed birthdays- they pick them, I just execute.

I got Converse (or PF Flyers) in all black on black. No one wears them better than Benjamin Rodriquez but my son pulls it off pretty well. I’m trying to find the perfect fitting dark Levi, rigid denim with the roll up and I actually loved Smalls ‘Trout hat’ even though he said to burn it. My mind goes wild…. And I get on Etsy.

Then there’s the Mom. She completes the package. I will be there on the side lines saying ‘run faster!” Or more like- “stop looking for aliens in the sky and watch the ball!” But i’ll be there supporting and maybe with a little Can in my thermal gaggling with the others. Don’t think i’d leave my self out of a few sporty pieces.
